What drives transit on each corridor
- Drivers’ hours. Regulation (EC) No 561/2006 caps driving at 9 hours a day, extendable to 10 twice a week, with a 45-minute break every four and a half hours.
- Driving bans. France, Germany, Austria and Italy restrict heavy goods vehicles on Sundays and public holidays. Perishable transport is exempt in several of them, but not in all and not on the same terms.
- Loading and delivery windows. A consignee that only receives between 06:00 and 12:00 dictates the whole trip backwards from there.
- Two-driver crews. With two drivers taking turns the vehicle does not stop for rest, and transit is roughly halved.
