Why average fleet age matters
In refrigerated transport, equipment age is not a matter of appearance: the insulation of a body degrades over the years. The K coefficient worsens as the panel takes on moisture and deteriorates, and with it the ability to hold temperature under demanding conditions. That is precisely what the ATP certificate renewal checks.
A fleet averaging under three years works with a wide margin over the required minimum rather than scraping it. See the ATP-FRC certification guide.
Multi-temperature equipment
Part of the fleet is multi-temperature: a movable bulkhead splits the box into two compartments with independent set points, allowing frozen and chilled to travel on the same trip, each with its own record. It has to be requested at booking, as it determines the unit allocated.
Drivers
Drivers are employed staff, not subcontractors or rotating owner-drivers. They receive continuous training in handling sensitive freight, and their driving and rest time is planned to Regulation (EC) No 561/2006 before a trip is allocated, not improvised en route.
On long runs or where the delivery window is critical, a two-driver crew is assigned: two drivers in the same cab taking turns at the wheel, so the vehicle does not stop for daily rest and transit is roughly halved.
