Temperature-controlled transport

An unbroken cold chain between −30 °C and +30 °C, in ATP-FRC certified trailers with two independent probes logging continuously from before loading until after delivery.

What temperature range is guaranteed

The refrigeration units run between −30 °C and +30 °C, and the trailers are certified to ATP class FRC, which requires reinforced insulation and the ability to hold −20 °C inside with +30 °C outside.

Deep frozen
−22 °C to −18 °C · ice cream, frozen fish, quick-frozen product
Chilled
0 °C to +4 °C · meat, dairy, prepared meals
Fresh
+2 °C to +12 °C · fruit, vegetables and cut flowers, by product
Pharmaceutical cold chain
+2 °C to +8 °C · refrigerated medicinal product under GDP
Controlled room temperature
+15 °C to +25 °C · heat-sensitive medicines and product

Where a consignment needs two ranges at once, we allocate multi-temperature equipment that splits the box into two independently controlled compartments. See also frozen and chilled transport.

How temperature is controlled in transit

With two independent probes per trailer logging continuously, not with spot readings. Having two separate probes is what allows a sensor fault to be told apart from a genuine deviation in the load space.

  • Pre-cooling before loading. The trailer reaches the bay already at set point. Loading into a warm box is the single most common cause of an excursion early in a trip.
  • Thermal mapping of the box. The behaviour of each zone of the trailer is known, so the worst-case point is identified and the load is arranged accordingly.
  • Door-opening events. Every opening is recorded with time and duration, which is what explains any short-lived rise on the graph.
  • Live monitoring. Traffic sees position and temperature across the fleet, so a deviation is caught and corrected during the trip rather than discovered on arrival.

What documentation you get

At the close of every job we issue a trip temperature report with the full graph, the readings from both probes, the logged events and a digital signature. It is emailed and retained for 5 years. It is the document that supports a claim, a customer audit or an inspection. See temperature records.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if temperature goes out of range in transit?

An alert is raised on the traffic system and the driver is instructed immediately. The deviation is recorded on the graph with its exact time and duration, and is reported to the customer before delivery, not afterwards. Hiding an excursion is what turns a minor incident into a rejected load.

Can I check the temperature while the freight is on the road?

Yes. The traffic desk has live readings from every trailer and can report on a specific trip on request at +34 972 863 031. At the close of the job the full report is emailed automatically.

What is the difference between an ATP-FRC trailer and a plain insulated one?

An insulated trailer only preserves: it slows heat ingress but produces no cooling. An ATP-FRC unit carries mechanical refrigeration plus reinforced insulation (K coefficient of 0.4 W/m²·K or lower) and is officially certified to hold −20 °C inside at +30 °C outside. For international perishable transport, ATP is mandatory.

Is ATP required for domestic transport within Spain?

The ATP Agreement governs international transport, but Spanish rules extend equivalent requirements to domestic movements of certain perishables in practice, and customers with quality systems require it regardless. The whole CoolCargo fleet is ATP-FRC, so the question does not arise.
